Mumbai Live News: A team of Mumbai police stationed in New Delhi since Monday is struggling to serve a physical copy of the summons to Nupur Sharma, the BJP’s suspended spokesperson. A case was registered against Sharma at Pydhonie police station after she made remarks against Prophet Mohammad following which the Mumbai police had sent her a soft copy of the summons via email on June 12.

Meanwhile, there has been a marginal drop in daily Covid cases in Mumbai in the last 24 hours with 2,255 new cases being recorded on Friday as against 2,366 cases reported on Thursday. Besides, two Covid deaths were reported on Friday, taking the total fatalities to 19,580 fatalities. Meanwhile, the weekly growth rate has increased to 0.170 per cent.

Doctors are observing a rise in Covid-19 infection among young children and adolescents. One in 10 patients detected with the infection is under 20, according to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). But unlike the second wave, the severity is less with a majority of patients remaining asymptomatic.

At a traffic island in Worli near the old passport office, Gattani’s “Cutting Chai” stands tall at 10 feet, comprising two hands that seem to clink cutting chai glasses. Gattani said, “Cutting chai is so Bombay. It is like a leveller. At a tapri, one can see a carpenter and someone in a suit relishing a ‘chai’.”

Built of acrylic and stainless steel, ‘Cutting Chai’ was installed by RPG Art Foundation, in partnership with MCGM, in December 2021. The plaque states that it’s “An Ode to the City that Never Sleeps” and that “Mumbai’s Cutting Chai is akin to the City’s Lifeblood.”

The BJP has made arrangements of medical and logistics to get its two ailing MLAs — Laxman Jagtap and Mukta Tilak — to the Vidhan Bhawan in Mumbai to exercise their votes for the state legislative council polls.

State BJP president Chandrakant Patil said, “We have made all necessary arrangements. The permissions and clearances along with medical assistance for both the members have been secured. It is a complex process and requires permission from the Centre.”

The council elections for ten seats will take place on June 20. The BJP is leaving no stone unturned and is maximising its support by reaching out to each and every one both within and outside the party.

It’s been almost six years that a stretch between Mahim bus stop and Sitladevi temple on the Lady Jamshedji Road has been dug up for tunnelling work of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 and construction of Sitladevi Metro station. The barricades put up for carrying out the work have blocked more than half of the road which is causing major traffic congestion on the stretch, peak hours or not. A single bus entering the area forces vehicles to crawl and takes several minutes to cover the distance of just a few 100 metres. Not only commuters, local shopkeepers and residents too are having nightmares due to the never-ending work and traffic snarls on the stretch. Read more 

The Maharashtra cyber police, which is probing the loan app scam case in which five persons have been arrested, have traced their connections to 11 states. The police have found that the five, who were arrested from Dharwar in Karnataka, have extorted money from victims in 11 states. Read more 

The Shiv Sena’s 56th foundation day celebrations will be low-key this year with party chief and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray set to address the party cadre online. The subdued celebrations have been necessitated by the rising Covid-19 cases in the state and the Legislative Council elections that are scheduled to be held on Monday.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande said, “Covid cases are increasing in the state and our CM Uddhav Thackeray is very alert and sensitive to the situation. He is focused on taking steps to arrest the surge in infections. Our MLAs have also been put up in a hotel (ahead of the MLC polls). Hence, he has decided to make his foundation day address online and the celebrations, too, will be subdued this year." Read more

Ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections on June 20, all the parties have planned to keep their Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) together in a Mumbai hotel to avoid poaching by the rival party.

The ruling Shiv Sena, after summoning its legislators, those of allies, and independent MLAs to Sahyadri guest house for a meeting on Friday, shifted them to a five-star hotel in Powai. The Bharatiya Janata Party has called its MLAs to Mumbai on Saturday and will be keeping them at Taj hotel in Cuffe Parade. Read more 

The Bombay High Court on Friday refused a plea by the promoter of DishTV India Pvt Ltd, seeking to restrain Yes Bank, a shareholder of DishTV, from exercising its rights – including voting rights – over shares held by the bank.

The single-judge bench of Justice Anil K Menon rejected an interim application for urgent relief by World Crest Advisors LLP, promoter group of DishTV, seeking to restrain Catalyst Trusteeship and Yes Bank from participating in and/or exercising any right, including voting rights, in the Extra-ordinary General Meeting (EGM) scheduled on June 24. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), out of the two Covid-19 casualties reported in Mumbai, one was of an 86-year-old man with comorbidities such as hypertension and heart condition. The other deceased was a 57-year-old woman with Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and lung cancer. Read more 

UNLIKE LAST year, when 957 students had scored perfect 100 per cent in the SSC exams, the number this year has dropped down significantly with only 122 students managing this feat in the SSC results declared on Friday. This year, 122 students from across the state scored a perfect 100 per cent of which one student is from the Mumbai Division. AS THE Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results were declared on Friday, the Mumbai Public Schools (MPS) run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) again showed an impressive performance. Out of the total 16,807 students who sat for the exam, 16,319 cleared it recording a pass percentage of 97.10. A 37-year-old homemaker who was returning home after dropping her two sons to school died in a crash when her scooter was hit by a speeding school bus in Goregaon (east) on Friday afternoon. The 40-year-old driver was arrested under sections of IPC for rash and negligent driving causing death. The incident took place around 1.15 pm on the G M link road in Iraniwada in Goregaon (east). An ex-serviceman who lost a family property dispute allegedly attempted suicide inside a courtroom at the Bombay High Court around 11am on Friday, after his plea was rejected.

The court had passed an order in a matter between the man around 55 years old and his mother under the Senior Citizens Act.

The man, whose matter was listed before Justice Prakash D Naik for passing orders, was stopped from killing himself by advocate Mahesh Rawool, who was standing close to him. As Rawool called for help, the man was taken into custody by the Azad Maidan police.

Maharashtra on Friday recorded 4,165 new coronavirus cases, slightly fewer than previous day, and three pandemic-related deaths, the state health department said. State capital Mumbai alone reported 2,255 new cases and two fatalities.

On Thursday, the state had recorded 4,255 new cases and three deaths. The Covid-19 caseload rose to 79,27,862, and death toll reached 1,47,883. Active cases in the state stand at 21,749. Every district in Maharashtra has now active coronavirus patients. Besides two deaths in Mumbai, another death was recorded from Jalgaon.

A Mumbai police team is in Delhi in connection with the probe against now suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma for alleged objectionable comments against Prophet Mohammad, an official said on Friday. The team, from Pydhonie police station here, is in the national capital for the past five days as it needs to physically hand over summons to Sharma to appear before police and to look into other aspects of the probe, he said.

The Covid-19 test positivity rate (TPR) in Mumbai jumped over 15 per cent twice in the current week, civic officials said on Friday, as the metropolis battles a fresh surge in cases after the third wave of the pandemic waned earlier this year.

They said TPR jumped to 15.58 per cent on June 14, when 1,724 people tested positive for coronavirus out of 11,065 tests conducted that day and then again on June 16 the rate shot up to 15.11 per cent when 2,366 new patients were detected on the back of 15,656 tests in a span of 24 hours.

Justice NJ Jamadar on Thursday concluded the hearing on the pleas filed by the two leaders and reserved them for orders on Friday.

Senior advocate Amit Desai, representing Malik, argued that his client was not seeking his release on bail but was merely seeking permission to be taken to cast his vote with an escort. He said Section 62 (5) of the Representation of the People Act did not prevent the high court from exercising its discretion to pass an order to facilitate the process of voting for Malik and such discretion was not taken away by any of the previous high court or Supreme Court judgments.

Police have recovered a domestic help’s gold ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh that she had mistakenly given to a poor woman along with bread kept in a plastic bag in suburban Mumbai.

According to the Dindoshi police, the poor woman threw the bag near a dustbin and rats took it inside a gutter. They went through a rollercoaster ride for 24 hours trying to trace the gold and managed to find it thanks to a low-quality CCTV camera that showed rats pulling the ornaments to the gutter. Encouraged by the response to the Mumbai Air conditioned local train services, The Western Railway (WR) has decided to increase the number of AC local trains on the Mumbai Suburban section with effect from June 20.

The WR has decided to introduce 8 new AC local trains, taking the number of AC locals running on its section from 32 to 40.
